Gochar: How Transits Confirm Events. A twelve-house wheel with Jupiter and Saturn both aspecting the 7th house around the Moon, showing a double transit

Every consultation eventually arrives at the same question: when? When will the marriage happen, when does the job change come, when does a difficult phase finally lift? A birth chart can show what is promised, and the dasha shows which chapter of life it belongs to. But to confirm the window in which an event actually unfolds, Vedic astrology has always turned to one tool: gochar, the transit of the grahas.

In this guide we explain how gochar is used to confirm events, the classical techniques astrologers rely on, why doing it by hand is so demanding, and what the best astrology software for transit analysis should do for you. We also show how acult by AstroAnsh, an advanced Vedic astrology app, puts every one of these checks on one screen.

What gochar means in Vedic astrology

Gochar means the movement of the grahas through the twelve rashis, read against your birth chart. The natal chart is fixed at the moment of birth; the transiting planets keep moving, and as they pass over sensitive houses, lords and points in your chart, they switch those promises on and off.

Two reference points are used together:

  • Chandra lagna (the Moon sign). The classical transit rules in texts such as Phaladeepika are counted from the natal Moon.
  • The ascendant (lagna). Most practising astrologers also read transits from the lagna, especially for house-specific events.

Not every transit carries the same weight. The slow grahas mark the big turns of life, and the fast ones fine-tune the timing:

GrahaTime in one signWhat it does in event timing
Saturnabout 2.5 yearsSets the long phases: responsibility, delay, maturity
Jupiterabout 1 yearOpens the door: growth, blessing, expansion
Rahu / Ketuabout 1.5 yearsSudden shifts, desire and detachment
Sunabout 1 monthPoints to the month
Marsabout 1.5 monthsActs as a trigger, often the week
Moonabout 2.25 daysNarrows it to the day

The golden rule: dasha promises, gochar confirms

The most important principle in predictive Jyotish is simple, and it protects you from most mistakes:

  1. The birth chart must promise the event. The relevant house, its lord and its karaka must show it, ideally confirmed in the relevant divisional chart (D-9 for marriage, D-10 for career).
  2. The dasha must activate it. The Mahadasha and Antardasha lords must be connected with that house or its lord.
  3. The transits must confirm it. Jupiter and Saturn in particular must reach the same houses the dasha is pointing to.

Five transit techniques for confirming events

1. The double transit of Jupiter and Saturn

This is the best-known timing rule in modern Vedic astrology. A house tends to deliver its results when both Jupiter and Saturn influence it at the same time, by occupying it or by aspecting it, during a dasha that already points to that house.

  • Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th houses from itself.
  • Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th houses from itself.
  • Check the house itself and its lord, from the lagna and from the Moon.

For marriage, astrologers look for the double transit on the 7th house or its lord; for a new job, the 10th; for childbirth, the 5th.

2. Transits counted from the Moon sign

The classical texts name the houses from the Moon in which each graha tends to give good results. Two of the most used:

  • Jupiter is favourable in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th from the Moon.
  • Saturn is favourable in the 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon.

A dasha of a well-placed planet running while Jupiter and Saturn move through their favourable houses from the Moon is a strong sign that the period will deliver.

3. Vedha: the obstruction points

Classical gochar has a subtle safeguard called vedha. A favourable transit can be blocked when another graha transits its paired "obstruction" house at the same time. For example, Jupiter's good result in the 2nd from the Moon is obstructed by a planet transiting the 12th. Vedha is one of the most overlooked rules in transit reading, and one of the main reasons simple transit predictions go wrong.

4. Ashtakavarga bindus

Ashtakavarga turns transit reading from a yes/no rule into a measure of strength. Every sign receives bindus (points) in each planet's own table (Bhinnashtakavarga), and the totals form the Sarvashtakavarga of 337 bindus, an average of about 28 per sign.

  • A planet transiting a sign where it holds 4 or more bindus in its own table tends to give good results.
  • Signs with more than 28 points in the Sarvashtakavarga are generally strong for the matters of that house.

This is why two people going through the same Saturn transit can have very different experiences.

5. Sade Sati and Saturn's great cycles

Sade Sati is Saturn's roughly seven-and-a-half-year transit through the 12th, 1st and 2nd houses from the natal Moon, in three phases. It is not automatically unfortunate. Its effect depends on Saturn's strength in the birth chart, the dasha running, and the bindus of the signs involved. Astrologers also watch Ashtama Shani (Saturn 8th from the Moon) and Kantaka Shani (Saturn in the kendras from the Moon).

A worked example

This is an illustrative chart, not a real person's.

Take a Libra ascendant with the 7th house in Aries. Its lord, Mars, is well placed, and Venus (the karaka of marriage) is strong in the D-9. The native enters Venus Mahadasha, Mars Antardasha: the lagna lord and the 7th lord together, a period that clearly points to marriage.

Now the transits. Jupiter moves through Leo and aspects Aries with its 9th aspect. Saturn moves through Aquarius and aspects Aries with its 3rd aspect. Both slow grahas are influencing the 7th house together, during a dasha of the 7th lord. That is a textbook double transit.

The final checks: Jupiter's own table shows 5 bindus in Leo, and no planet sits in its vedha point. The window narrows further as the Sun and Mars pass over the 7th house and its lord. The chart promised, the dasha activated, and gochar confirmed.

Why doing it by hand is so demanding

Even this one example needed a lot of checks: two reference points, nine grahas, three kinds of special aspects, vedha pairs, eight Ashtakavarga tables and three dasha levels. Add these practical complications:

  • Retrogression. Jupiter and Saturn often enter a sign, turn back and re-enter, so one transit becomes two or three separate windows.
  • Sign boundaries. A planet near the edge of a sign may change sign on a different day depending on the ayanamsa and the accuracy of the ephemeris.
  • Birth-time error. A few minutes' difference can move the lagna, and with it every house-based transit.

This is exactly where an advanced astrology app earns its place: not by replacing the astrologer's judgement, but by doing the exact arithmetic instantly, so your attention goes to interpretation.

What the best astrology software for gochar should do

When you choose the best astrology software or the best Vedic astrology app for transit work, look for these:

  • Exact positions. Accurate sidereal longitudes, correct retrograde stations and precise sign-change dates.
  • Transits over the natal chart, from both the lagna and the Moon.
  • Ashtakavarga beside the transits, so strength is visible at a glance.
  • Sade Sati windows across the whole life, with the three phases dated.
  • Dasha to deep levels, Maha, Antar and Pratyantar, with boundary dates.
  • Event rules that are shown, not hidden. The software should tell you why a period is highlighted, not just print a score.
  • Birth-time rectification, because every transit depends on an accurate lagna.
  • English and Hindi, on phone and desktop.

How acult by AstroAnsh helps you confirm events

acult (the Comprehensive Universal Logic Tool) is the advanced Vedic astrology app built by AstroAnsh for astrologers, researchers and Jyotish students. It was designed around exactly this workflow:

  • Gochar and Transits sections lay the current and future positions of the grahas over your natal chart.
  • Ashtakavarga in full, Bhinna and Sarva, all 337 bindus, computed rather than approximated.
  • Sade Sati with full lifetime windows across all three phases.
  • Vimshottari Dasha to four levels, from Maha to Sukshma, with exact boundary dates.
  • The Events section, with 82 classical questions (marriage, first job, property, higher study, litigation and more). Each is a complete rule set that shows which grahas carry the significations in your chart, and which dasha periods activate them.
  • Birth-time rectification, so the lagna your transits depend on is right.
  • Astronomical precision: planetary positions from the VSOP87 theory and the Moon from ELP-2000, agreeing with Swiss Ephemeris to within about one arc-second.

A practical workflow you can follow today

  1. Confirm the promise in the birth chart and the relevant divisional chart.
  2. Shortlist the dasha periods whose lords connect to that house.
  3. Look for the double transit of Jupiter and Saturn in those periods.
  4. Check the Moon-sign rules and vedha for the key transits.
  5. Weigh the Ashtakavarga bindus of the signs involved.
  6. Fine-tune with the Sun, Mars and Moon for the month, week and day.
  7. If the timing keeps missing, rectify the birth time and run the checks again.

Frequently asked questions

Is gochar more important than dasha? No. The dasha decides whether a period can deliver; gochar decides when within it. They work together.

Which transit matters most for event timing? The combined transit of Jupiter and Saturn over the relevant house or lord, supported by the running dasha.

Can astrology software replace an astrologer? No. The best astrology app removes calculation errors and saves hours, but synthesis and judgement remain the astrologer's work.

What is the best app for gochar analysis? Choose one with exact ephemeris data, transits read from both the lagna and the Moon, full Ashtakavarga, deep dashas, and rules you can inspect. That is the standard acult by AstroAnsh is built to.
